Science, partnership, and shared purpose in the Pacific

Just two months after committing to work with the Cook Islands on responsible seabed mineral development, the recent NOAA-led research expedition by the E/V Nautilus brought Cook Islanders and international experts together on a 21-day ocean research expedition, combining local knowledge and global expertise to study deep ocean habitats. The data collected will help the Cook Islands further establish itself as a global leader of responsible ocean management and seabed resources.

With leadership from the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, this collaboration was shaped with Cook Islands partners from the start – aligning local priorities, advancing scientific research, and applying world-class U.S. technology.

The United States looks forward to further deepening our bilateral relationship and shared commitment to working together to ensure science-based decision making, responsible ocean research, and resilient critical minerals supply chains.
