The Badger Herald’s spring fashion forecast – The Badger Herald

One thing about us Wisconsinites — we jump at any chance to break out our warm-weather wardrobe. So when “fools’ spring” rolls around each year, we all begin — without fail — to imagine the outfits we can finally wear on campus without them being cancelled out by a giant puffer jacket. Below is The Badger Herald approved spring fashion forecast.

Heels

Did you hear? Heels are the new bar shoes. You heard it here first: there’s no more waiting for that once-a-year special occasion to wear them. Swap out your dreary bar sneakers for a cute kitten heel and let the compliments roll in (note: factor in the price of an Uber on your night out — your feet might need it). A heeled boot or classic kitten heel peeking out from a pair of jeans is a sure way to elevate your typical going-out outfit.

Thick belts

I don’t think we’re using belts to their full accessorizing potential. Lately, my Pinterest has been packed with thick belts styled over mini skirts and dresses — a perfect way to spice up an otherwise simple look. They also work wonders with high-waisted jeans and a lightweight sweater tucked in. Go the extra mile by matching the hardware on your belt to your go-to jewelry metal, and don’t be afraid to experiment with textures like leather or suede to add even more dimension to your outfit.

Pea coat (buttoned to the top)

One of the bright sides of Wisconsin’s lingering winter is the opportunity to experiment with multiple coats. It’s not too late to jump on the pea coat train — a classic choice for those of us who want to look like we’ve teleported straight from the stylish streets of NYC. Buttoned all the way up, a pea coat instantly elevates any outfit and adds a polished, put-together feel. Pair it with straight-leg jeans and a sleek boot to fully lean into the effortlessly chic look.

Charm bracelets and necklaces

What’s more fun than asking someone to explain the backstories behind all of the charms they’ve collected? Dig up old charms from your childhood and steal charms from your current jewelry pieces to curate the perfect charm bracelet or necklace. Go crazy, and feel free to mix and match different metals in this project, too. Even more trendy than charm bracelets and necklaces themselves is the sound they make when the charms jingle against each other. It’s reminiscent of your cool second-grade teacher who always wore her hair up in a messy, but perfect, bun.

Colorful and patterned tights

Neutral tights had their moment, but this spring is all about color and pattern. From sheer polka dots to bold reds, statement tights are an easy way to add personality to skirts and dresses you already own. They’re especially perfect for those in-between weather days when you still want your outfit to feel fun and intentional.

Big purses

Gone are the days of pretending all your necessities fit into a purse the size of a granola bar. Oversized totes and slouchy shoulder bags are officially back, proving that practicality can still be stylish. Whether you’re hauling around your laptop, a book, lip gloss or a just-in-case sweater, a big purse ties your look together while actually keeping up with your day.

Denim on denim

Denim-on-denim is not a fashion risk anymore — it’s a trusty power move. Mixing different washes, like a light jacket with darker jeans, keeps the look interesting. The key is balance: add a simple tee or tank underneath and let the denim do the talking.

Sheer layers

Sheer fabrics are the perfect way to add a touch of whimsy to your spring wardrobe. Aren’t we all trying to bring more whimsy into our lives? Think lightweight blouses, skirts or dresses layered over neutrals to create depth and dimension without feeling overwhelming. Pair a sheer top with a cami underneath, or layer a sheer skirt over shorts for a playful look. Sheer layers are an easy way to make your outfits feel fresh and airy as the weather warms up (hopefully).

Chunky watches

What better way to de-center yourself from your phone than by checking your wrist for the time? And you can do it in style. Funky, chunky watches are everywhere — especially secondhand — so you can find a piece that feels unique to you. Pair one with rolled-up sleeves or layered bracelets (maybe even a charm bracelet?) to make your watch the star of the show.

3/4 sleeves

The perfect in-between length for unpredictable spring weather, 3/4 sleeves are equal parts practical and stylish. They keep your arms cozy without feeling overheated, making them ideal for layering under jackets. 3/4 sleeves are also great layered under dresses in the springtime.

Whatever looks you’re curating this spring, remember, every outfit looks great with the latest edition of The Badger Herald in hand.
