Entain chief Stella David has slammed the Premier League’s “complicity” with black market gambling in a letter to league CEO Richard Masters.
In the letter, David welcomed the government’s announcement yesterday (23 February) that it would be consulting on new rules to block sports sponsorships by unlicensed gambling operators.
It comes following years of top-flight British football teams featuring unlicensed betting brands, often Asian-facing sites with links to criminal enterprises, via a dubious white label loophole in the law.
David wrote: “On Saturday 28 February, Bournemouth host Sunderland in a ‘black market derby,’ with both teams sporting gambling sponsors without UK licenses on their shirts.”
