CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) – The creators of Lost and Found in Cleveland, a 2024 film starring Mark Wahlberg and Loretta Devine are raising copyright concerns.
Filmmakers Keith Gerchak and Marisa Guterman said an AI generated book surfaced with the same name as their film.
“There’s a part of us that’s flattered because it was published the same week this fictional author wrote about Marty Supreme and Nuremberg,” Gerchak said.
The book’s synopsis describes a critical analysis of the film. But Gerchak said the AI-generated content creates storylines for their characters that are not factual.
“That’s where I think they crossed the line with the copyrighted material,” Gerchak said. “When you do research on this book in the copyright records, it’s not there. So the book itself is not copyrighted.”
Guterman said the situation reflects a broader tension between artificial intelligence and creative ownership.
“It’s this interesting kind of tension point in art,” explained Guterman. ” When it takes ownership and authorship over someone’s creative work, that is crossing the line.”
19 News reached out to Amazon about the concerns surrounding the book.
Within 24 hours it was taken off the site.
The filmmakers said this is something artists will have to deal with now.
“It’s going to be on the shoulders of the audience to use their own discernment to figure out. Is this a legitimate book, is this a real book?” Guterman said.
Amazon suggests anyone who finds a book on Amazon they believe is stealing their work or not meeting their content guidelines should be reported.
