Major transport disruptions are expected across Greece on Saturday, February 28, as workers in key sectors participate in a 24-hour nationwide strike marking three years since the Tempi rail disaster.
Ferry services will be suspended nationwide following a decision by the Pan-Hellenic Seamen’s Federation (PNO) to hold a 24-hour strike covering all categories of vessels. The strike will begin at 00:01 and end at midnight on February 28, effectively halting passenger and commercial routes to and from the Greek islands for the day. The federation said it is participating in the nationwide action partly in solidarity with those calls for enhanced transport safety following the Tempi tragedy.
Rail services will also be fully disrupted. Hellenic Train has announced that no routes will operate across the national network due to the participation of railway workers in the strike.
Railway unions said the strike marks the third anniversary of the Tempi rail disaster and is aimed at pressing for improved safety systems, staffing, infrastructure upgrades and accountability related to the 2023 accident.
In Athens, a decision is still pending regarding metro and other urban transport services. Commuters are advised to monitor official announcements, as further disruptions to public transport may be confirmed in the coming days.
Rallies are scheduled to take place at noon in central Athens and in other major cities, which may also impact road traffic.
Travelers are encouraged to check directly with operators before planning journeys on February 28.
