The latest: Modern Times celebrates its 90th anniversary! Critics praised it for being as packed with savvy social commentary as it was with laugh-out-loud gags.
For generations, kids would look at their shoes and think “I bet my shoelaces taste like spaghetti,” thanks to the hilarious antics of Charlie Chaplin, one of the most iconic artists in cinema history.
Born in London, Chaplin first began performing in music halls before eventually working as a stage actor in comedy sketches. He would later conceive of The Tramp persona with Keystone Studios, and then further develop the character at Essanay Studios, where he made The Tramp. In 1919, he co-founded United Artists, gaining complete creative control, which led him to making a string of comedic masterpieces, including The Kid, The Gold Rush, City Lights, and Modern Times. He would go on to win an honorary Oscar for The Circus, and would later be nominated for Best Actor for his work in The Great Dictator.
In honor of his legendary career, we’re compiling his best films and ranking them by Tomatometer! Check out the list below and catch up on his side-splitting body of work. — Bryce Marrero
