Greece has earned two spots in Europe’s Top 20 destinations for 2026, according to the latest ranking by European Best Destinations, one of the continent’s most closely followed annual travel surveys.
Each year, the organization combines expert evaluation with large-scale public participation. First, travel specialists assess more than 500 destinations across Europe, examining Eurostat tourism growth data, online search trends, social media engagement, and each location’s commitment to sustainability, accessibility, and local economic development. Next, in cooperation with international travel media, they narrow the list to 20 finalists.
Ultimately, public voting determines the final order. This year, 1,330,682 registered travelers took part, and each participant selected up to three destinations.
Ano Koufonissi ranked 13th
Ano Koufonissi ranked 13th overall and stands out as one of Europe’s most appealing island escapes for the year ahead.
Located in the Cyclades, the small island draws visitors with its whitewashed lanes, blue-accented houses, and crystal-clear Aegean waters. Moreover, coastal walking paths connect its beaches, while sea-carved rock pools create naturally sheltered swimming areas. In addition, boat excursions to nearby Kato Koufonissi offer greater seclusion for travelers seeking a slower pace.
At the heart of the island, the main settlement blends small cafés, artisan boutiques, jewelry workshops, and traditional tavernas. There, fresh seafood and classic Greek dishes shape the culinary identity. As a result, daily life unfolds at an unhurried rhythm centered on swimming, walking, and evenings overlooking the sea.
Avlemonas in Greece ranked 16th among Europe’s top destinations
Avlemonas, a coastal village on the island of Kythira, secured 16th place in the European ranking.
Built around a natural harbor, the village features turquoise coves and rock-formed swimming areas that function as informal sea pools. Meanwhile, whitewashed houses overlook the bay, and life concentrates along the waterfront. Small guesthouses and family-run rooms maintain an intimate scale, which reinforces the village’s quiet character.

Beyond its scenery, Avlemonas also appeals through its local gastronomy. Fresh fish, regional cheeses, honey, and citrus products appear prominently on menus, typically served on shaded terraces with sea views. Nearby beaches further enhance the experience and showcase some of Kythira’s most striking coastal landscapes.
