The American College of Greece Seeks to Establish a Non-State University


The American College of Greece (ACG) has officially submitted an application to establish Deree, The American University of Greece, a non-state university, in collaboration with Roger Williams University, based in Bristol, Rhode Island, USA. The application was submitted on Thursday, February 26.

According to ACG, “Founded in 1875, the American College of Greece is the oldest and largest non-profit organization with American accreditation in Europe. Throughout its history, ACG has maintained a consistent mission, international focus, and commitment to academic excellence. Its goal has always been to broaden students’ horizons and support their personal and professional development. The addition of Deree, American University of Greece NPPE, will allow ACG to offer state-recognized university-level programs while preserving its educational philosophy and high academic standards.

Partnership with Roger Williams University

The new university will operate in academic collaboration with Roger Williams University, accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE). The partnership aims to provide American-style university programs within a fully regulated Greek framework. The NPPE (Non-State Private Postsecondary Education) status will enable students to earn an American degree while studying in Greece.

In a statement, Edward C. Wingenbach, PhD, President of the American College of Greece, said: “The collaboration with Roger Williams University strengthens Greece’s position in global higher education. As student mobility and international academic connections grow, Deree University will offer authentic American education, supporting Greece’s ambition to become a hub for higher education and international student mobility in the region.

Ioannis N. Miaoulis, PhD, President of Roger Williams University, added: “Together, we are creating opportunities for interdisciplinary learning, fostering social responsibility, and preparing students for careers within the Greek higher education framework. By aligning our educational values and standards, we are enhancing international opportunities and preparing graduates to lead in an interconnected world.

Programs and Schools

Once licensed, Deree, American University of Greece NPPE will consist of three schools:

  • Management & Economics
  • Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences
  • Sciences & Technology

The university will initially offer 24 undergraduate programs and one graduate program. All degrees will be awarded by an institution accredited by NECHE and licensed by the State of Rhode Island. Business programs will also hold AACSB accreditation through the Mario J. Gabelli School of Management at Roger Williams University.

ACG emphasized that Deree University will maintain the non-profit mission of the college, providing scholarships and financial support to ensure access and reward academic excellence. Existing Deree College students will continue their studies as currently structured. The NPPE will admit only first-year students under the new university framework, following licensing and approval.
