CarepathRx supports a range of home and ambulatory infusion solutions to hospitals and health systems, Evernorth says.
Cigna’s Evernorth has confirmed that it has taken full ownership of CarepathRx.
A spokesperson for Evernorth Health Services said, “As part of our work to enhance and expand the ways we support patients living with specialty conditions and the clinicians who treat them, we completed the acquisition of CarepathRx last year. CarepathRx supports a range of home and ambulatory infusion solutions to hospitals and health systems.”
The news was first reported by STAT on Thursday.
CarepathRx is a large pharmacy backed by private equity that dispenses prescription drugs to nearly 10% of U.S. hospitals, according to the STAT report. The acquisition was discovered after a review of Cigna’s financial filings, the report said.
The acquisition builds on the strategic investment Cigna announced in 2023, the Evernorth spokesperson said.
In June 2023, Evernorth announced a multi-year partnership and investment in Carepath Health System Solutions (CHSS), a provider of end-to-end pharmacy care delivery. The partnership brought together specialty and care expertise to accelerate pharmacy care delivery for the growing number of patients with chronic and complex care needs such as rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn’s disease, cancer, and more.
As of 2023, CHSS served 600-plus hospitals, health systems and physicians.
The partnership brought together Evernorth’s specialty and care expertise with CHSS’ pharmacy and infusion management capabilities.
Together the companies help hospitals with their in-house specialty pharmacies, offering patient management technology solutions, virtual pharmacy care, infusion management, polypharmacy services and pharmacy operations, according to Evernorth.
Evernorth was launched by The Cigna Group in 2020 to provide pharmacy, care and benefit solutions to health plans, employers and government agencies. It includes pharmacy benefit manager Express Scripts.
