The Tyus Jones run with the Dallas Mavericks will be short-lived.
According to The Stein Line’s Marc Stein, the Mavericks are going to cut ties with the 11-year NBA veteran after recently picking him up via trade with the Charlotte Hornets.
For Jones, he’ll get to hit the free agency market and search for a team with a winning situation, as the Mavs struggle to navigate through their season.

With the departure of Jones, the Mavericks are opening up a roster spot.
Considering where they are at, the Mavericks are unlikely to bring in a seasoned veteran. The team will have an opportunity to convert a player—or bring in a young prospect to get an extended look on a primary roster.
Marc Stein suggests that the open roster spot could lead the Mavericks to convert their two-way standout, Ryan Nembhard, to a standard deal.

Nembhard is a former Gonzaga standout who went undrafted in 2025 after leading the NCAA in assists. This year, Nembhard has appeared in 38 games for the Mavs. Seeing the court for 18.8 minutes per game, the rookie has made 42% of his shots and 37% of his threes to average 6.7 points and 4.9 assists per game.

For now, the Mavericks aren’t competing for the postseason. While they haven’t been eliminated from postseason play, their 21-38 record has them placed 6.5 games behind the 10th seed. It would have to take a lot of winning in order for the Mavs to catch the Clippers.
Dallas traded away Anthony Davis, which signaled a clear rebuilding move. Kyrie Irving called it a season before his debut, which was another sign that the Mavs were focusing on the future. Lastly, they are being extremely cautious with the injured, Cooper Flagg.
Although Flagg doesn’t have a timeline in place for his return, the Mavs surely aren’t fast-tracking his recovery process. Getting the potential Rookie of the Year fully healthy into the offseason is key.
For a player like Jones, sticking with a non-playoff team isn’t productive. Jones could be a valuable addition to a postseason-ready team.

The 29-year-old has stints with the Minnesota Timberwolves, Memphis Grizzlies, Washington Wizards, Phoenix Suns, and the Orlando Magic under his belt.
This season, Jones averaged 3.0 points and 2.4 assists, while shooting 34% from the field.
Over 730 games, his career averages are at 7.4 points and 4.3 assists per game. Jones has been a part of four playoff runs. All but one of them were with the Memphis Grizzlies.
