Lee University’s Dr. Jason Schmurr will present a talk titled “Hidden Patterns in the World Around Us: From Benford’s Law to Artificial Intelligence” as part of the spring session of the Cleveland Bradley County Public Library’s “Sassy Science Series.” The program will take place on Tuesday, March 10, at noon and will include a 40-minute presentation followed by a 20-minute Q&A session.

“What looks random at first glance often contains deep and beautiful structure, and mathematics gives us a way to see that hidden order,” said Dr. Schmurr, professor of mathematics.

His talk will cover how surprising mathematical patterns appear in everyday data from the lengths of rivers to financial fraud and even the geometric structure of language itself.

In addition to teaching a wide range of courses in mathematics and computer science, Dr. Schmurr has been active in promoting student work through theoretical study and collaborations with industry. He also focuses on developing free curricular materials for students, such as textbooks and online homework. Dr. Schmurr received his Doctor of Philosophy and Master of Science at Oregon State University and his Bachelor of Arts at Wheaton College.

“We’re excited to welcome Dr. Schmurr to continue the spring Sassy Science Series,” said Kathy Davini, adult programming coordinator at the Cleveland Bradley County Public Library. “This series is designed to make science engaging and accessible, and our partnership with Lee University allows us to offer high-quality programs to the community.”

The event is free and open to the public and will be held in the Flex Room of the Cleveland Bradley County Public Library, located at the corner of Church Street and 8th Street.
