KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Tennessee Lady Volunteers softball Sweep Doubleheader in Dominant Fashion

The Lady Vols continued their impressive run on the diamond, sweeping Saturday’s doubleheader with a 3-1 win over the Penn State Nittany Lions softball and an 8-0 victory against North Carolina Central Eagles softball.

Strong Defense Sets the Tone Against Penn State

Tennessee’s defense was on full display in game one, highlighted by a stellar performance in the circle from Karlyn Pickens. Pickens pitched a complete seven innings, striking out nine batters while keeping Penn State’s offense in check.

Offensively, the Lady Vols capitalized on early opportunities. A hit-by-pitch to Gabby Leach allowed Sophia Knight to score and gave Tennessee early momentum.

Later in the game, Leach delivered a key hit that created confusion for the Nittany Lions’ defense, allowing the Lady Vols to plate two more runs and secure the 3-1 win.

Early Explosion Powers Game Two Victory

In game two, Tennessee wasted no time taking control. The Lady Vols jumped out to an early lead in the first inning as Sophia Knight, Ella Dodge and Gabby Leach all crossed the plate. The offensive surge continued in the second inning when Tennessee added five more runs, putting the game firmly out of reach.

The pitching staff remained dominant. Erin Nuwer and Sage Mardjetko combined to strike out nine batters and toss a no-hitter in the 8-0 shutout victory, capping off a commanding performance in the circle.

With the sweep, Tennessee carries strong momentum into its final game of the weekend. The Lady Vols will return to action Sunday against the Appalachian State Mountaineers with the first pitch scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
