Is Shopbop Legit? I Tried the Amazon-Owned Fashion Site — Here’s My Honest Review


If you’ve ever filled an online cart at Shopbop and then backed out, wondering, “Is this site actually legit?” you’re not alone. I’d been eyeing their selection for ages, hovering over the checkout button and then chickening out.

I finally placed my first order during one of their big sales. It did not go perfectly… but it also didn’t turn into a horror story. Here’s exactly how it went, from shipping and returns to what happened when a $500+ pair of sandals showed up looking suspiciously used.

First Things First: What Is Shopbop, Exactly?

Shopbop is an online fashion retailer that stocks everything from contemporary labels to higher-end designer pieces. You’ll find shoes, handbags, dresses, denim, activewear…the whole wardrobe…mostly geared toward women, with a men’s section tucked in as well.

They carry brands like Cult Gaia, Kenneth Jay Lane, Havaianas, and more, so it’s very easy to lose an afternoon scrolling.

Shopbop is owned by Amazon (just like Zappos), which means you can link your Amazon account and use Prime perks on eligible orders. In theory, you get the fun fashion-site experience with the shipping and return safety net of Amazon.

That was the idea, anyway.

My First Order: Great Prices, Slow Start

My first Shopbop haul was during a big sale where a bunch of new arrivals were heavily discounted. I ordered:

Right away, there was a hiccup. I had actually ordered two pairs of flip-flops in different colors, but Shopbop oversold the white pair and canceled that part of my order.

Annoying? Yes. The end of the world? Not really, especially during a big sale when inventory is moving quickly. But it was strike one.

The bigger frustration was processing time. I somehow didn’t connect my Amazon shipping when I checked out (still not sure what I was doing there), yet shipping itself was still free and took only about two days once the package finally left the warehouse.

The catch: it took 10 days to ship in the first place.

So the delivery was fast. The processing felt like it took forever. I’m willing to chalk at least some of that up to sale chaos, but if you’re used to instant Amazon turnarounds, it’s going to feel slow.

The $548 Sandals That Arrived Looking… Used?

The item I was most excited about was a pair of heeled sandals from Cult Gaia. I’ve admired their designs for ages, but hadn’t pulled the trigger until I saw these on sale. The heel has that “invisible” look, and they’re just very cool shoes.

These did not look fresh out of the factory. You could see toe imprints in the footbed, scuffing on the sole, fraying, and even spots where the glue looked like it was starting to separate. If you walked into a store and saw these on a display shelf, you’d assume someone had already broken them in.

Full price, these are around $548. Even on sale, that’s not “shrug and move on” territory. For that price point, I expect pristine.

At this point, I was disappointed with Shopbop, but I also wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt. It was a big sale. Mistakes happen. Still, this is the kind of thing quality control should catch.

The Earrings Were Gorgeous… and Completely Unwearable

Next up: the oversized gold earrings by Kenneth Jay Lane.

On looks alone, 10/10. They’re bold, dramatic, and feel well-made in your hands. Unfortunately, they are also the heaviest earrings I have ever put on my ears. My earlobe basically dropped down toward my shoulder. (You can see this in my YouTube video.)

I told myself I’d wear them around the house for half an hour to see if I could tolerate the weight. I lasted ten minutes before I had a headache. No amount of “but they’re so pretty” can fix that, so they went straight into the return pile.

At Least the Flip-Flops Were a Win

The Havaianas flip-flops were the one drama-free part of this whole order.

I’d originally fallen in love with Havaianas when a friend from Brazil gifted me a pair. My dog Buddy destroyed those, so this was my attempt to replace them.

They arrived in perfect condition, true to size, and exactly what I expected. It’s hard to mess up a classic rubber flip-flop, and Shopbop didn’t.

How Shopbop’s Return Process Really Works

I ended up returning the earrings and, eventually, dealing with the sandal issue too.

A key thing to know about Shopbop:

  • You have 30 days to send items back.

  • For the return to be truly free, you need to ship it back within 15 days, or they’ll deduct a $10 fee.

Print that part on your brain if you’re a chronic procrastinator.

My return experience itself was a little rocky. Shopbop emailed me to confirm they’d received the earrings and that my return was being processed. Then… silence. A full week went by with no update.

I finally emailed customer service asking what was going on. They replied within a few hours, apologized, and said they’d look into it. The next day, I got another email saying my refund had been issued.

When I asked about the delay, they explained that they’d been slammed with orders and that returns usually take up to five business days. Mine had taken longer than normal, and they apologized for the inconvenience.

So the return did go through, and the money did hit my account. It just took a little persistence on my end.

The Exchange Problem (and Where Customer Service Shined)

Here’s where things got tricky—and where Shopbop redeemed itself.

Technically, Shopbop doesn’t do traditional exchanges. If you want a different size or a replacement, the official policy is: send the item back, get a refund, and then place a new order.

The problem? My Cult Gaia sandals were bought on sale. If I followed the standard process and ordered a new pair, I’d be paying full price.

So I emailed customer service, explained that the sandals had arrived in obviously worn condition, gave them my order number, and asked what could be done.

A few hours later, they responded with a very apologetic email and went above and beyond:

  • They immediately shipped out a replacement pair of sandals

  • They did this before I had even sent the original pair back

It felt like they trusted me as a customer and took the issue seriously instead of hiding behind policy.

For context, I placed this order under my personal email with no blog or YouTube details attached. As far as they knew, I was just a random shopper.

The Replacement Sandals: Finally, What I Paid For

When the new pair of sandals arrived, it was a completely different story.

They were:

The only “downside,” if you can even call it that, was realizing just how broken-in the first pair had been. Even though both pairs were the same size, my wide feet had a tougher time sliding into the fresh pair.

I’ve been wearing them around the house to break them in, and now they’re starting to feel like the shoes I originally wanted. It’s a relief, honestly.

So… Is Shopbop Legit?

Short answer: Yes, Shopbop is legit. But this order wasn’t without its issues.

They sell real products from real designers, they’re backed by Amazon, and in my experience, their customer service will step up when something goes wrong.

However, my first order was far from flawless:

  • Processing and returns were slower than I’d like

  • One high-end item arrived in unacceptable condition

  • You need to pay attention to the 15-day “free return” window

On the flip side:

  • Shipping was fast once the order left the warehouse

  • Customer service responded quickly and fixed the sandal issue in a very generous way

  • The replacement sandals and my Havaianas flip-flops were exactly what I’d hoped for

Would I shop there again?

Yes. The rocky start was frustrating, but the way they handled it matters just as much as the mistake. They made it right without making me jump through a dozen hoops, and that goes a long way.

If you’re thinking about placing an order, my advice is:

  • Link your Amazon account so you get Prime perks

  • Keep an eye on sale events, because that’s where the real value is

  • Inspect everything as soon as it arrives

  • Start your return immediately if something’s off, so you don’t get hit with that $10 fee

Shopbop isn’t perfect, but it’s not some sketchy corner of the internet, either. Just go in with realistic expectations—and maybe a reminder on your calendar for that return deadline.
