In these algorithmically driven times, micro trends trap us at every turn. Spend 0.5 seconds on social media and you’ll still be inundated with the latest It-bags or must-have shoes guaranteed to revolutionise your life. But there is one trend that we simply can’t seem to shake. No, it’s not balletcore or blokecore or Brat summer, but something a little more stripped back: ’90s minimalism.
Monochrome basics are having a moment (although, when are they not) thanks, in part, to the entire western world becoming re-obsessed with Carolyn Bessette Kennedy via Ryan Murphy’s Love Story. Set against a backdrop of TriBeCa lofts and Joe D’Urso-inspired office spaces, FX’s latest production has made CBK’s striped-back wardrobe the real star of the show. With heaps of Yohji Yamamoto, Prada and, of course, Calvin Klein, there are many minimalist looks to recreate.
Below, we take a look at the outfit formulas currently in the fashion set’s heavy rotation.
V-neck and midi-skirt
Valentina Valdinoci
A look that calls to mind the much-circulated Carolyn Bessette Kennedy camel skirt and Prada boots without veering into full copycat territory, this slouchy knitwear and midi-skirt combination provides the perfect dose of monochrome minimalism. Pair with some sensible sling-backs and you’ve got all the components of the ’90s without shivering to death in a slip dress.
