LeBron James and Stephen Curry won an Olympic gold medal together in 2024.
The Golden State Warriors have spent most of this season putting out fires. Jimmy Butler is done for the year. Stephen Curry has missed eleven straight games with a knee injury. The playoff picture is precarious at best. For a franchise that has grown accustomed to competing at the highest level, this version of the season has been a difficult one to watch.
But the offseason is coming. And according to a new report, Golden State’s biggest stars are already planning their next move.
Per Lakers Daily, Curry and Draymond Green are set to heavily recruit LeBron James once free agency opens this summer. James becomes an unrestricted free agent for the first time since 2018, and Golden State intends to make its case.
Why the Warriors Believe They Have a Shot
GettyLeBron James #6 of the Los Angeles Lakers stands next to Stephen Curry #30 of the Golden State Warriors.
The relationship between James, Curry, and Green is genuine and well-documented. James and Green share the same agent in Rich Paul of Klutch Sports Group. Curry and James played together for Team USA at the 2024 Paris Olympics, winning gold under Warriors head coach Steve Kerr. James has said publicly in the past that playing alongside Curry is something he would welcome.
Geography plays a role too. James’ wife and daughter are based in Los Angeles. San Francisco is roughly 90 minutes away by air — close enough to maintain family life without remaining with the Los Angeles Lakers, who are widely reported to be moving on from the James era to fully commit to building around Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves.
The Warriors also have a practical need. Butler’s ACL tear has left a void at starting swingman that Golden State will need to address. At 41, James remains one of the most complete forwards in the league, averaging 24.4 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 8.2 assists last season on 51.3 percent shooting. The fit is obvious on paper.
Bill Simmons recently went on record predicting the Warriors as his pick to land James. “I think it’s going to be Golden State,” Simmons said on his podcast. “Golden State makes the most sense to me because they actually need him. And the narrative of finishing your career with Steph Curry, the other great player of my generation — that’s compelling.”
The Obstacles Standing in the Way
The interest is real. The execution is complicated.
James carries a $52.6 million cap hit this season, a figure no team is likely to match on a new deal. The Warriors are already carrying significant salary commitments, with Curry’s max contract and Butler’s deal both on the books. Porzingis’ $30.7 million expiring contract provides some relief, but Golden State’s front office will need to be creative to carve out meaningful cap space.
The most realistic path involves James accepting a significant pay cut — something he has never done in his career. A veteran minimum deal would give the Warriors maximum flexibility, but asking the all-time leading scorer to take that kind of discount is a significant ask regardless of the narrative appeal.
A sign-and-trade involving Butler’s contract is the other avenue, but finding a team willing to absorb that deal in the wake of a torn ACL presents its own challenges. The Cleveland Cavaliers and New York Knicks are considered the frontrunners in James’ free agency if he returns, which means Golden State will be competing against established destinations with cleaner financial situations.
Final Word for the Warriors
The Warriors have reportedly pursued James before without success. This time, they are betting that the relationship between their stars and the appeal of one final championship run together can accomplish what front office maneuvering could not.
Curry and Green recruiting James directly is a different kind of pitch. It is personal. It is genuine. And it carries the weight of two all-time players asking a third to join them for one last run before the window closes for good.
Whether James listens is another question entirely. But the conversation is coming.
Golden State is ready to make its case.
