Ahmet Dirican, Professor of Medical Oncology at Medicana International İzmir Hospital, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Who is a good oncologist?
A remarkable JCO article attempts to answer this question. A good oncologist is not merely someone who delivers evidence-based therapy.
A good oncologist:
- Puts the patient at the center.
- Builds trust and meaningful relationships.
- Communicates with clarity and compassion.
- Possesses emotional intelligence.
- Manages the burden of cancer care.
- Balances hope with realism.
- Commits to lifelong learning and leadership.
And my perspective:
A good oncologist is not someone who treats disease strictly according to guidelines, but someone who never forgets that the person in front of them has emotions, fears, anxieties, and a family – a social life beyond the diagnosis. Perhaps a good oncologist does not only treat cancer, but also carries the human being facing it.”
