Greek conservative politicians, including from the far right, have reacted on social media following the assassination of Charlie Kirk, a conservative advocate and ally of US President Donald Trump, who was shot Wednesday at Utah Valley University.
Kirk was killed by a sniper believed to have fired from a distant rooftop before fleeing into a nearby neighborhood. Authorities recovered a high-powered rifle, and the shooter remains at large.
Ministers from Greece’s ruling conservative party, New Democracy, posted on the social media platform X. Migration and Asylum Minister Thanos Plevris, from the far right, described the killing as “shocking” and offered condolences to Kirk’s family.
Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis, also far-right in his views, said Kirk was targeted for defending his ideas, noting he had every right to express them freely.
Maritime Affairs Minister Vassilis Kikilias described the assassination as “a blow to democracy” and highlighted the loss to Kirk’s children.
Alternate Transport Minister Konstantinos Kyranakis wrote that Kirk “gave his life for freedom of speech” and lamented the role of hatred in the attack.
Far-right Voice of Reason party leader Afroditi Latinopoulou posted a video blaming “the left” for the killing, calling it part of an “undeclared war.”
Authorities have not confirmed any political motive, and the shooter’s identity remains unknown.
