Pieter Mulier is, like, a totally important designer.
On the eve of his last Alaïa collection, the Belgian creative director proved it with a sparse but stunning runway that referenced the beloved French fashion house’s 1990s archive, including several square-necked, skintight party dresses made famous by Cher Horowitz in Clueless. Even better: Alicia Silverstone, a.k.a. Cher herself, was in the front row to bear witness to the whole gorgeous scene. (She brought her teen son, Bear, as her date, which was way existential.)
Mulier’s farewell collection included a spray of black layered skirts restrained by tight black coats, a lipstick-red pony hair poncho, and croc-embossed leather trenches that everyone already wants.
But it was the wham-bam bodycon dresses remade from designer Azzedine Alaïa’s 1994 catwalk that really lit up the room by combining the impeccable tailoring of the Paris house with the juiciest fashion flex in all of pop culture, with Mulier’s sly take on sex appeal guiding it all. It helped that mega-models Gemma Ward, Natasha Poly, and our own current cover girl Binx Walton were in the pieces, because they’re total betties.
The good news for shoppers: Mulier made the dresses in fresh colorways like slate gray and brushed gold to give them a modern update, then took the cherry red of the original Clueless dress and turned it into a long-sleeved version on model Mariacarla Boscono. For those craving the OG, however, might we suggest Vestiaire Collective? Let’s revisit in the morning, after we’ve volunteered for Pismo Beach Disaster Relief.
