Every generation is fascinated by (and maybe a little suspicious of) the new kids on The Street. What motivates these baby-faced New Yorkers besides their bank accounts? We don’t have the answers, but a few hard workers we cast from LinkedIn might. For our March issue, four of the finest guys in finance tell us how they stay after it.

TOMMY DOHERTY, 25

Associate Vice President

What do you do?

I work on the Foreign Exchange Sales and Trading desk at Barclays Investment Bank.

How many hours a week do you work?

50–55.

Where do you live?

TriBeCa.

What’s the most you’ve spent on something stupid?

A few thousand on a work desk for my apartment. I’ve never worked from home before.

What’s your financial advice?

Know your risk tolerance and have a well-diversified portfolio.

What’s your take on crypto?

I think BTC and other cryptocurrencies are great hedges to fiat currency, especially with how poorly USD has traded over the past year.

Where do you eat?

Benvenuto Cafe in TriBeCa is a great late-night place. My other favorites are Monkey Bar, The Odeon, and Soothr.

Where do you go out?

The West Village, TriBeCa, and SoHo. More likely than not I’m somewhere on Hudson St.

Where do you take dates?

I like going to a cocktail bar or grabbing coffee. Sometimes a Sunday stroll on the WSH [West Side Highway] too.

How many hours of sleep do you get?

Eight.

What clubs do you belong to?

The New York Athletic Club.

What’s your drink of choice?

Dirty vodka martini with extra olives.

Where do you go out after work?

There are a handful of places near the office, but I like going to Hudson Hound or Barrow Street Ale House for Thursday Night Football.

What apps are you on?

Raya.

How many vests do you own?

I’d say five to 10.

What is your idea of hell?

Going to any ticketed event for SantaCon.

Where do you work out and how often?

The New York Athletic Club, four to five times a week. If I’m not lifting, I really like to sauna/steam/cold plunge there.

When do you crash?

Usually around 9pm on the weeknights, since I’m in the office quite early.

What do you love about New York?

The energy and opportunities, Prospect Park, Puffy’s [Tavern] for college or NFL football, the NYAC roof in the summer, New York Rangers games, and Marathon Sunday.

MASON CLARKE, 24

Investment Banking Analyst

What do you do?

Entertainment investment banking—advising film, music, media, and hospitality companies.

Where do you live?

FiDi.

What’s the most you’ve spent on something stupid?

$200+ on an Uber from LaGuardia Airport.

What’s your financial advice?

Live below your means, invest early, and don’t build the lifestyle before you build the foundation.

Where do you eat?

I prefer to eat home-cooked meals but enjoy trying new Italian or sushi restaurants around the city.

Where do you go out?

SoHo, West Village.

Where do you take dates?

My girlfriend and I have recently tried La Tête d’Or, Misi, and Sake No Hana.

How many hours of sleep do you get?

Five to six on a good night.

Have you ever cried at work?

No.

What clubs do you belong to?

The Program, Renzo Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Academy.

What’s your drink of choice?

Chianti.

Home to recharge.

How do you handle stress?

Working out and listening to music.

What’s your most expensive mistake?

Missing the Amtrak train home for Christmas.

Unfortunately, only one.

What is your idea of heaven?

Financial freedom, a strong mind and body, and a life surrounded by the people I love.

What is your idea of hell?

Mediocrity.

How do you stay fit?

Lifting, running, wrestling, and jiu-jitsu.

Where do you work out and how often?

I work out with a fitness group called “The Program” at various gyms across the city, five to six days a week.

When do you crash?

When my Excel freezes at 3 AM.

What motivates you?

Taking care of the people I love.

How do you waste time?

Compulsively organizing things that don’t need to be organized.

What do you love about New York?

The energy, hustle, and grit. It makes you sharper.

What do you hate about New York?

The rats.

Financial Services Data, Tech, & AI Analyst

What do you do?

I help major banks and other Fortune 100 firms become more efficient through AI and technology.

How many hours a week do you work?

On a good week? Maybe 55. On a bad week? Lord knows.

Where do you live?

Lower East Side, but I’m from Oak Cliff, Dallas.

What’s the most you’ve spent on something stupid?

I bought a painting for $1400 that is simply a bunch of lines.

What’s your financial advice?

Own it when you need it, rent it when you want it.

What’s your take on crypto?

I see crypto how I see AI. Everyone wants to use it but no one really knows how to maximize it yet.

Where do you eat?

When I’m in the office I shoot for Cava, Chipotle, Jollibee. If I’m in my neighborhood, Empanada Mama or 7th Street Burger. If I’m feeling fancy, Fogo de Chão.

Where do you go out?

Damballa, Elsewhere, and Brooklyn Storehouse, although I love a good night at Wiggle Room, The Ripple Room, Record Room [LIC]—any place ending in “room” has my name all over it.

Where do you take dates?

Art galleries where the wine is free, and then TAO Downtown afterwards.

How many hours of sleep do you get?

Six or seven.

Have you ever cried at work?

I force myself not to, but early on I used to take feedback personally instead of constructively.

I’m in the PwC Run Club and I participate in the corporate basketball league. Outside of work I’m a Nupe, a spring ’22 initiate of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc.

What’s your drink of choice?

Old fashioned is my go-to but Guinness if I’m with co-workers.

Where do you go out after work?

The sauna to decompress, or Magic Hour Rooftop Bar & Lounge for happy hour.

What apps are you on?

X to keep up with the markets, TikTok to distract me from my CPA studying, and Duolingo because I have my first trip to Paris soon.

How many vests do you own?

I have approximately six vests and seven Vineyard Vines quarter zips.

What is your idea of heaven?

An art gallery with top-shelf wine, strawberry matcha, live jazz, and landscape portraits inside an all-you-can eat sushi buffet with all my kinfolk.

What is your idea of hell?

Not making my family proud.

How do you stay fit?

Running 5Ks and half marathons, weightlifting, and biking home.

When do you crash?

When I don’t have a good routine.

What motivates you?

Making my younger self proud and inspiring people to chase their dreams, no matter their circumstances.

What do you do?

Equities sales and trading, specifically equity swaps and custom baskets.

How many hours a week do you work?

55.

Where do you live?

West Village.

What’s the most you’ve spent on something stupid?

$3k on a Moncler jacket I definitely didn’t need.

What’s your financial advice?

Start investing early. Even if it’s as simple as buying the S&P 500, it’s important to get your money in the market.

What’s your take on crypto?

Not allowed to trade it, but the crypto market is a bit too volatile for my liking.

Where do you eat?

L’Artusi, Semma, Don Angie.

Where do you go out?

People’s, BOOM at The Standard Hotel, Paul’s Casablanca.

Where do you take dates?

Jac’s on Bond, Bar Pisellino, or Mace.

How many hours of sleep do you get?

Six to seven.

Have you ever cried at work?

Thankfully not.

What’s your drink of choice?

Dirty vodka martini.

Where do you go out after work?

The bars near my office are so corporate and stale, I usually try to escape back to the West Village as fast as possible.

What’s your most expensive mistake?

Started investing in the stock market in early 2020, right before COVID hit.

Only four.

What is your idea of heaven?

A continuous DJ set, everybody dancing and having the time of their lives.

What is your idea of hell?

Double floor at Barry’s.

Where do you work out and how often?

Equinox, Barry’s, and West Side Highway runs. I work out five to six days a week.

What motivates you?

I am innately curious and love to learn. I am always motivated by a challenge.

What do people get wrong about you?

I am very analytical, but I have a creative side that I express through music. I have played piano since I was five years old.

How do you waste time?

Doomscrolling on Instagram.

What do you love about New York?

There is such a dynamic mix of people here. There’s opportunity in every setting, whether you’re at a coffee shop, in a business meeting, or at a nightclub. You never know who you are going to meet.

What do you hate about New York?

It feels like you have to tap your card just to leave your apartment.
