Study in Greece Symposium on Global Hellenism and the Internationalization of Higher Education through the Greek language
On March 16, 2026, Study in Greece (SiG), under the auspices of the Ministry of Education, Religious Affairs, and Sports and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is organizing a conference dedicated to the Greek language and its teaching around the world, highlighting its role as a timeless vector of culture and a modern strategic tool for the internationalization of Greek universities.
The event aims to become a benchmark for Greek language learning worldwide, bringing together the Greek academic community, the Greek diaspora, and philhellenes who choose to connect with Greece through language in a meaningful dialogue. In an environment where the internationalization of higher education is a central priority, the Greek language is seen not only as a cultural heritage, but also as an active learning and development resource that creates new prospects for academic mobility, cooperation, and extroversion.
The symposium will feature the presentation of the Faros Global Community online portal, an international hub that thoroughly maps departments, programs, and academic structures related to Greek language and culture around the world. This initiative aims to strengthen the links between Greek and foreign universities, facilitate the development of joint academic activities, and create a dynamic network of cooperation focused on the Greek language, history, and culture.
Emphasis will also be given to the digital platform “e-λληνομάθεια”, which utilizes modern distance learning methods to make learning the Greek language accessible to anyone willing to learn, regardless of their physical location. This initiative is aimed at both Greeks and philhellenes living abroad and prospective international students, providing organized learning programs and contributing to the acquisition of certified language proficiency, a prerequisite for studying in Greek-taught programs, which are seeing growing international demand.
In parallel, the overall strategy of Study in Greece for the global promotion of Greek universities and the attraction of international students will be presented, with particular emphasis on Greek-taught study programs and connections with the Greek Diaspora. Distinct examples of joint academic and research initiatives will highlight the role of the Greek language as a catalyst for international cooperation and cultural exchange, transforming the Diaspora into an active partner in internationalization and not simply a recipient of educational activities.
The Greek language, with its historical depth and contemporary dynamics, continues to be a vibrant gateway to communication, knowledge, and culture. This initiative aims to highlight its strategic importance for the future of Greek higher education and for strengthening Greece’s ties with the global Greek Diaspora and the international academic community.
The workshop will take place in the “Jacqueline de Romilly” Hall of the Ministry of Education, Religious Affairs, and Sports in hybrid form, with the option of attending in person or via live stream. The event is open to the public and will be conducted in Greek. Registrations for attendance are available here.
