The United States men’s national basketball team remains at the top of the global rankings after advancing to the second round of the Americas qualifiers, but competition among the world’s leading basketball nations is tightening.
Tight Race at the Top
The Top 10 of the rankings remains relatively stable, although the margins separating several teams have become extremely narrow. Fewer than three ranking points separate the Serbia men’s national basketball team, France men’s national basketball team and Canada men’s national basketball team, meaning any of them could climb higher when the next qualification window takes place.
Just behind them, the Australia men’s national basketball team and the Spain men’s national basketball team are separated by only a slim margin.
An even tighter grouping exists between the Argentina men’s national basketball team, Lithuania men’s national basketball team and Brazil men’s national basketball team. Lithuania currently holds ninth place by the narrowest of margins, with 750.124 points compared to Brazil’s 750.122.
Greece Climbs Into the Top 12
The Greece men’s national basketball team moved into the Top 12 after defeating the Montenegro men’s national basketball team and securing qualification for the second round of the European qualifiers.
Meanwhile, the Latvia men’s national basketball team dropped in the rankings following consecutive losses to the Poland men’s national basketball team.
Other Nations on the Rise
The New Zealand men’s national basketball team climbed to 24th place after recording two away wins against the Philippines men’s national basketball team and the Guam men’s national basketball team during the Asian qualifiers.
The China men’s national basketball team also rose to 26th place after securing away victories over the Japan men’s national basketball team and the Chinese Taipei men’s national basketball team.
Inside the Top 50, the Israel men’s national basketball team recorded the biggest improvement, climbing four spots after back-to-back wins against the Cyprus men’s national basketball team.
In Africa, the Côte d’Ivoire men’s national basketball team moved up to 38th place after remaining unbeaten through their first three games of the African qualifiers.
Further down the rankings, the Madagascar men’s national basketball team posted the biggest leap in the Top 100, jumping nine places to 94th despite not recording a win in Window 2.
The Jamaica men’s national basketball team also rose eight positions, while the Uganda men’s national basketball team climbed from 90th to 83rd after a competitive performance against the unbeaten Mali men’s national basketball team.
The latest rankings highlight the growing competitiveness in international basketball as teams prepare for the next stage of the qualifiers.
