Greece is expanding its regional defence role after offering to help protect Bulgarian airspace and territory from potential ballistic missile threats.
According to defence sources, Greek Defence Minister Nikos Dendias discussed the issue during a phone call with Bulgaria’s Defence Minister Atanas Zapryanov, confirming that Greece is prepared to extend its anti-ballistic defence umbrella to cover neighbouring Bulgaria if required.
Greece Ready to Shield Bulgarian Skies
During the conversation, the Greek minister reportedly assured his Bulgarian counterpart that Greece’s existing missile defence capabilities could contribute to protecting Bulgaria from a potential ballistic missile strike originating from Iran.
The move reflects growing regional security concerns amid tensions in the Middle East and highlights Greece’s increasing role as a security provider in southeastern Europe.
Greece’s Expanding NATO Role in the Balkans
Greece has for several years played a key role in safeguarding airspace in the southern Balkans through air-policing missions under the framework of NATO.
Through these operations, the Hellenic Air Force monitors and protects sections of regional Flight Information Regions (FIRs), helping allied countries maintain airspace security and respond quickly to potential threats.
The extension of Greece’s anti-ballistic coverage would further strengthen NATO’s defensive posture in the Balkans, particularly as missile threats and regional instability remain a concern for European security planners.
Strengthening Regional Defence Cooperation
The discussion between Athens and Sofia also reflects closer defence coordination between the two neighbouring NATO allies.
If implemented, Greece’s defensive support would provide an additional layer of protection for Bulgaria while reinforcing the alliance’s collective defence principle.
Officials emphasised that cooperation between allied countries is essential in addressing emerging missile threats and ensuring stability across southeastern Europe.
