PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — More than 400 Philadelphia students showcased their science projects Thursday at the annual George Washington Carver Science Fair.
The event, hosted by Temple University, is for kids in grade 6 through 12 who attend public, charter, parochial and private schools in Philadelphia, as well as home-schooled students residing in the city.
More than 250 science projects were on display for everyone to engage and explore.
This is the 47th year for the event.
The fair is named after George Washington Carver who was born into slavery in Missouri around 1864, and became a renowned agricultural scientist, inventor, and educator.
As a prominent African American in the early 20th century, he was known for developing alternative crops to cotton, such as peanuts and sweet potatoes and developed methods to prevent soil depletion.
