NASCAR’s ecosystem is filled with high-profile names, from famed drivers like Chase Elliott, Joey Logano and Kyle Larson to noteworthy owners like Richard Childress, Roger Penske and Rick Hendrick.

In many ways, the latter influences the former. Childress helped facilitate Dale Earnhardt Sr.’s dominance in the 1980s and 1990s, while Logano and Larson have been aided by investment from their famous owners.
Childress, Penske and Hendrick are legendary figures as far as NASCAR fans are concerned. But they’re not quite headliners, certainly not when compared to the sport’s greatest-ever benefactor: Michael Jordan.
Jordan’s love of NASCAR is well-documented, with the basketball Hall of Famer offering his presence at races over the years. He’s invested more into the sport in recent years, purchasing a team of his own and pushing it up the Cup Series standings.

Does Michael Jordan own a NASCAR team?
Jordan does, indeed, own a NASCAR team. He’s part owner of 23XI Racing, joining forces with co-owners Curtis Polk and Denny Hamlin to purchase a Cup Series charter ahead of the 2021 season. He enlisted Bubba Wallace to man the cockpit of the organization’s first ride, driving the No. 23 Toyota Camry.
23XI has added two full-time chariots and one part-time vehicle in the years since its debut, with Riley Herbst (No. 35), Tyler Reddick (No. 45), and Corey Heim (No. 67) all contending for glory in 23XI colors in recent years.

Wallace was the first driver to sign for 23XI Racing, agreeing terms with the nascent company ahead of the 2021 season. He captured his first Cup Series triumph later that year, vanquishing all comers at Talladega in a rain-shortened race.

He’s since added two wins to his collection, claiming victories in Kurt Busch’s No. 45 car at Kansas in 2022 and his own No. 23 at Indianapolis in 2025. Under the 23XI Racing banner, Wallace has two postseason appearances. He’s one of the Cup Series’ finest drivers on superspeedways and has made a marked improvement on road courses.

Herbst joined 23XI Racing in 2025, becoming the team’s third Cup Series driver. The 27-year-old is an Auto Parts Series veteran, having raced in NASCAR’s second division for seven seasons.
Herbst limped to a 35th-place finish in his maiden Cup Series season, recording multiple DNFs and nine speeding penalties, the second-most in the top flight.

He put forth a solid display in the 2026 Daytona 500, competing for a lead late and giving Reddick the shove he needed to get through the finish line. Herbst went on to finish eighth place.

Reddick is the best driver in 23XI Racing’s ranks. He took the mantle in the No. 45 car in 2023, months after Busch retired due to injuries sustained in a wreck.
The Corning, Calif., native had already established himself as a household name in NASCAR, capturing two Auto Parts Series titles and two Cup Series wins prior to his time with 23XI.
Reddick has taken his performances to new heights since climbing into the No. 45 chariot. He’s qualified for the postseason in each of his first three seasons, capturing a regular-season title in 2024. Reddick’s depth-defying comeback at Homestead in 2024 secured him a spot in the Championship 4, making him a Cup Series darling.

In 2026, Reddick won his first Daytona 500, besting Chase Elliott at the horn to pick up his first Harley J. Earl Trophy. He proceeded to win each of his next two races following his Daytona 500 triumph, becoming the first driver to sweep the first three races of a NASCAR season in history.

Heim is the youngest member of the 23XI crew, joining the side as a development driver in 2025. The 23-year-old has only competed in a handful of races for the Toyota juggernauts.
