M5 MacBook Air vs MacBook Pro — Ports, connectivity, and expansion
Ports are one of the most practical differences between the MacBook Air and the 14-inch MacBook Pro.
MacBook Air includes MagSafe 3 charging, two Thunderbolt 4 ports, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. The selection covers the basics but can push users toward adapters once storage drives, cameras, or wired displays enter the setup.

MacBook Air and MacBook Pro both use the Apple M5 chip, so their baseline CPU performance is very similar. Each machine ships with a 10-core CPU made up of four Super Cores and six efficiency cores.

Explicit Geekbench results for the M5 MacBook Air haven’t shown up yet. For a rough comparison, the closest we have is the fanless M5 in the 13-inch iPad Pro, which works in a similar thermal environment.
MacBook Air uses the same CPU configuration, so short-burst performance is nearly identical between the two machines. The 13-inch iPad Pro with M5 scores 4,142 in single-core performance and 16,484 in multi-core performance in Geekbench.
MacBook Air relies on passive cooling, while MacBook Pro uses active cooling with a much larger thermal envelope. Geekbench runs are short, so they don’t always show the full advantage of that design.
Tougher workloads like compiling code, exporting video, or rendering graphics let MacBook Pro maintain higher performance for extended periods.

Battery life is strong on both machines, though MacBook Pro holds the edge in Apple’s official estimates.
Apple says the 14-inch MacBook Pro can deliver up to 24 hours of video streaming or about 16 hours of wireless web use. MacBook Air is rated for up to 18 hours of video streaming and around 15 hours of wireless web use.
The difference comes partly from MacBook Pro’s larger battery, which measures 72.4 watt-hours compared with 66.5 watt-hours in the 15-inch MacBook Air.
Real-world results depend heavily on workload, display brightness, and connected accessories. Lighter tasks such as browsing, writing, or streaming video can approach Apple’s estimates, while heavier workloads will reduce battery life on both machines.

The MacBook Pro comes with hardware upgrades that the MacBook Air doesn’t have, like the Liquid Retina XDR display and active cooling. It also offers extra ports, including HDMI and an SDXC card slot.
A fully configured 14-inch MacBook Pro with the M5 chip reaches $3,269. That configuration includes 32GB of unified memory, a 4TB SSD, and Apple’s optional nano-texture display.
Which to buy
Both the MacBook Air and the 14-inch MacBook Pro come with the same M5 chip. The choice really comes down to the other hardware features they offer.
MacBook Air will be the better fit for most buyers. It delivers essentially the same short-burst performance in a thinner and lighter design, while starting $600 cheaper than the MacBook Pro.
MacBook Pro’s higher price is due to features for heavy workloads. The Liquid Retina XDR display is brighter and supports ProMotion. The chassis has HDMI and SDXC ports, and active cooling extends the M5 chip’s peak performance.
