WASHINGTON (Gray DC) – Science and health activists gathered Saturday at 48 locations across the country to protest what they describe as the dismantling of science and health institutions during President Donald Trump’s second term.
The events, organized under the banner “Rally to Take Back Science,” were hosted by Stand Up for Science, an organization created to defend and advance what it calls America’s scientific ecosystem.
Organizers said the goal of the National Day of Action was to end political interference in science and health and to champion decision-making grounded in evidence and the public interest.
The Trump administration has promoted its “Make America Healthy Again” agenda, but Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has faced criticism for his positions on vaccines amid a rising number of measles cases, among other controversial efforts related to medicine and food.
Stand Up for Science’s flagship rally took place on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. and featured speakers, scientists, health professionals, and lawmakers.
Founder and CEO Colette Delawalla said the organization was initially inspired by cuts to federal programs, but that science and health are areas that affect every American.
“God forbid, you or a loved one is impacted by an illness that doesn’t have a cure, the first place that you’re going to turn to for hope is science,” Delawalla said. “The first place you’re going to turn to to make sure that your water is clean is science, to make sure that your air is clean, it’s science.”
Saturday’s event also included family-friendly activities, educational booths, and DJs.
Stand Up for Science said it plans to continue its mission through Election Day, Nov. 3, 2026.
