Greece has once again proven to be a leading destination in European tourism, delivering exceptional experiences for its visitors. The country’s tourism satisfaction levels soared to an impressive 9.1/10 in the summer of 2025, outshining the European average of 8.7. Despite facing a dip in its online reputation due to environmental setbacks, Greece continues to draw in travelers, with regions and cultural experiences receiving praise across the board.
Greece’s reputation has long been synonymous with spectacular landscapes, rich culture, and delectable cuisine. However, the summer of 2025 posed unique challenges. Devastating wildfires, flooding in some tourist areas like Zakynthos, and ferry cancellations due to strong winds were among the setbacks that affected the online sentiment towards Greece. This resulted in a sharp fall in the country’s Net Sentiment Index (NSI) during the peak summer months, leaving it behind other Mediterranean destinations in digital perception.
Despite these challenges, Greece’s tourism sector stood resilient, maintaining one of the highest visitor satisfaction scores in Europe. According to the latest report by the Greek Tourism Confederation (SETE) and its research body INSETE, Greece’s tourism satisfaction remained remarkably high, with tourists giving glowing reviews on their overall experience. Cultural experiences, gastronomy, and hospitality were particularly highlighted, showing that even though the country’s online image took a temporary hit, the on-the-ground experience remained stellar.
One of Greece’s key strengths is the country’s rich cultural heritage. Tourists continue to be enamored by the country’s ancient ruins, museums, and historical landmarks. The INSETE report revealed that culture received an outstanding NSI score of 86, making it the most positively discussed aspect of Greece’s tourism offering. Alongside cultural experiences, Greek hospitality also received rave reviews, with local hosts ensuring that tourists felt welcomed and valued. Additionally, Greece’s world-renowned cuisine, which many travelers look forward to, scored a solid NSI of 77, reinforcing Greece’s status as a top destination for food lovers.
While the online image of Greece fluctuated throughout the summer, positive sentiments surged back in the months following the peak season, particularly in September. With improvements in online sentiment, Greece saw its NSI rise to 34, showing that the challenges faced earlier in the summer were gradually being overcome. For comparison, other countries like Croatia remained at the top with an NSI of 62, but Greece was steadily bouncing back and retaining its spot as a top destination for European tourists.
The latest data from the INSETE Greece Reputation Tracker reflects a broader shift in tourist satisfaction and perception. The survey, which analysed over 319,000 online reviews from tourists, highlighted that regions like Western Macedonia and Thessaly received excellent ratings, with Western Macedonia leading at a perfect score of 9.6. The diversity of positive feedback shows that Greece’s appeal is expanding beyond the typical tourist hotspots, with lesser-known regions gaining recognition for their unique offerings. This trend is helping to diversify the tourism market and spread the benefits of tourism across the entire country.
Furthermore, visitors from key markets like the United States, United Kingdom, and Germany awarded Greece high satisfaction ratings, with 9.4/10 from U.S. visitors and 9.0/10 from the U.K. While these markets have historically been strong sources of tourism, the positive reviews suggest that Greece’s offerings are resonating well with travelers from across the globe.
However, the report also indicated areas that need improvement for Greece to maintain its competitive edge. Sustainability remains a major concern for international tourists, especially younger generations who are more eco-conscious. Greece currently ranks among the lowest in Europe for the share of environmentally certified accommodation. This gap presents a significant opportunity for the government and local stakeholders to invest in green tourism initiatives and sustainable practices to meet the growing demand for environmentally-friendly travel options.
Looking ahead, the Greek government’s focus on extending the tourism season beyond the summer months also stands to benefit the country’s tourism sector. Efforts to promote year-round tourism and improve infrastructure will help reduce the impact of any seasonal fluctuations in visitor numbers. By addressing both online perceptions and real-world sustainability concerns, Greece has the potential to solidify its position as a year-round tourism destination, attracting not only traditional beach-goers but also adventure seekers, cultural enthusiasts, and eco-tourists.
Greece continues to deliver on its promises, offering visitors a memorable experience, despite facing challenges in the digital landscape. While the country’s online reputation saw a temporary dip in 2025, the tangible experiences of tourists prove that Greece remains a top-tier destination in Europe. With a strong focus on sustainable tourism and continued investment in its cultural and hospitality offerings, Greece is poised to remain a shining star in the tourism industry for years to come. The next chapter in Greece’s tourism story is just beginning, and it looks set to attract even more travelers eager to explore its timeless beauty.
