ATHENS – In his message for International Women’s Day, which is being celebrated Sunday, March 8, the President of the Hellenic Republic Constantine Tassoulas, stressed that it is “a day to honor women’s struggles and demands, a day of remembrance for the endurance, strength, pride, dignity, hard work and creativity of countless women throughout history, calling us to collective reflection.”
He added that, as Greece enshrines gender equality in its constitution and Greek women are active in social, economic, and political life, it is important to reflect on women worldwide who are fighting for a better future.
He referred to the women of Iran, who are fighting not only for their rights but for their very existence, as well as the women of Ukraine, who are keeping their country alive by fighting on the front lines. President Tassoulas also noted that women with such strength have paved the way in Greece, advancing with difficulty and conflict on the road to emancipation.
He also emphasized that these are the grandmothers and mothers of Greek women, who shoulder family responsibilities with pride, raising children and working at home, in offices, in crafts and in agriculture, while also contributing to science, technology, politics and the arts, often under conditions requiring extra effort, resilience, and strength.
President Tassoulas also noted that fathers, sons, husbands and partners must honor their daughters, mothers, partners, and colleagues in practice. He noted that, despite progress, inequalities remain, stereotypes persist, and gender-based and domestic violence continue to affect society.
In conclusion, the President of the Hellenic Republic called for the day to be dedicated to young women who demand equal opportunities, respect for their individuality and recognition of their rights. He stressed that gender equality is a commitment by society to itself, by democracy to its principles, and by institutions to their integrity and purpose.
