Close Encounters With Music presents ‘Mostly Amadeus—Meet the Mozarts!’ at Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center

Great Barrington– On Sunday, March 15th at 4 p.m., Close Encounters With Music presents “Mostly Amadeus—Meet the Mozarts!” at the Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center.

For more than two centuries, the music of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart has been treated as something close to supernatural—so perfect, so effortless, that generations have described him as a mere “quill in divine hands.” But genius is rarely that simple. Attendees are invited to look past the myth and confront Mozart as both legend and human being—and to question how we recognize authorship at all.

The program features two of Mozart’s most searching chamber works, “Piano Trio in B-flat major, K. 502” and “Piano Quartet in G minor, K. 478.” Sublime in craft yet emotionally volatile, these works reveal a composer capable of extraordinary beauty and unsettling depth. Heard together, they reinforce Mozart’s genius while exposing the intensity, risk, and ambition beneath the surface polish.

Featuring world-class musicians Ieva Jokūbavičiūtė, Hye-Jin Kim, Ara Gregorian, and Artistic Director Yehuda Hanani, the concert is on Sunday, March 15th at 4 p.m. at the Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center, located at 14 Castle Street in Great Barrington. Attendees are invited to an “Afterglow” reception. Tickets and more information can be found online.

Jesuit priest Father Gabriel (Jeremy Irons) enters the Guaraní lands in South America with the purpose of converting the natives to Christianity. He soon builds a mission, where he is joined by Rodrigo Mendoza (Robert DeNiro,) a reformed slave trader seeking redemption. When a treaty transfers the land from Spain to Portugal, Mendoza and Gabriel resolve to defend the mission from Portuguese slave traders, but find themselves divided on how to do so while honoring their vows. A stirring examination of the conflict between faith and action that’s lifted up by Ennio Morricone’s timeless score, “The Mission” continues to inspire debate 40 years after its release.

The event is on Saturday, March 14th at 7 p.m. at the Linde Center, located at 3 West Hawthorne Road in Lenox. Tickets and more information can be found online.
