ChatGPT users can now identify songs within the app using Shazam, after Apple brought its music recognition tool to OpenAI’s chatbot on Monday (March 9)
The feature works by typing prompts with the word “Shazam,” such as “Shazam, what’s playing?” or “Shazam, what is this song?”
Song artwork and audio previews will appear inline within the chat interface. Users with the Shazam app already on their device can also save discoveries directly to their in-app library, while those without it can still use the function as the integration doesn’t require the Shazam app to be downloaded.
“The Shazam app for ChatGPT brings the ease and speed of Shazam’s music recognition technology to ChatGPT, for a simple, seamless way to name and preview songs without leaving the chatbot,” said Shazam.
The deal is the latest in a string of third-party integrations OpenAI has been building around its chatbot. The AI company launched its apps ecosystem in October 2025 with partners including Spotify, Booking.com, Canva, Coursera, Expedia, Figma and Zillow.

Music has become one of OpenAI’s priorities. The Spotify integration allowed Free and Premium users to link their accounts to receive personalized music and podcast recommendations without leaving the chat window.
Apple Music followed in December 2025, allowing subscribers to create playlists and search for music through prompts, similar to how the Spotify integration works.
While Spotify and Apple Music integrations on ChatGPT are built around playback and curating playlists, the Shazam integration focuses on identifying songs.
For Shazam, the ChatGPT deal follows its integration with Ticketmaster in 2024, allowing artists to tie their live event listings directly to their tracks, so when a user Shazams a song, upcoming shows from that artist show up automatically. In 2023, Shazam added the ability to identify music from video content on YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok on iOS.
Shazam, acquired by Apple in 2018, says it has “hundreds of millions of” users worldwide.
The ChatGPT integration started rolling out globally on Monday on iOS, Android and web devices.
For Apple, the Shazam and OpenAI partnership comes as the tech giant continues to embrace artificial intelligence. Last week, Apple Music introduced a new set of metadata requirements designed to bring greater transparency around AI-generated content to the music industry.
Elsewhere at Apple Music, the platform recently launched what it called Transparency Tags — a system of disclosure labels that record labels and music distributors can begin applying to content delivered to Apple Music immediately, and will be required to use when delivering new content in future.
