Finance Maintains Top Spot, CS Suffers Largest Decline on Record – The Heights

For the fourth consecutive academic year, finance maintained its status as the most popular major at Boston College, while computer science experienced its greatest decline on record, according to BC’s Fact Book—an annual release of the University’s facts and figures compiled by the Office of Institutional Research and Planning.

Computer science dropped four spots to No. 10 with 384 students, down 149 students—or 28 percent—from last year. Despite that total representing the major’s lowest since 2018, the department maintains a 61 percent increase in enrollment over the last 10 years.

Economics remained the second-most popular major after finance overtook it in 2022 for the first time in 15 years. For the 10th consecutive year, biology and political science took the third and fourth spots, with 830 and 768 majors, respectively.

Communication returned to No. 6 after a one-spot drop last year, while neuroscience climbed two spots to No.7. Nursing held onto No. 8 for the fifth consecutive year, and applied psychology and human development increased one spot to No. 9.
