Nantucket Current | Nantucket High School Musical “Joseph And The…

The Nantucket High School musical “Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” opens this Thursday for the first of four performances at the Mary P. Walker Auditorium.

The musical, which features music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice, is based on the Book of Genesis from the Bible, and tells the story of Joseph, his brothers, and his colorful coat.

“I chose the show over the summer, and we started working on it at the beginning of January after having auditions in December,” said director and Nantucket High School music teacher Erin MacIver. “I have never directed this show before, but I have always wanted to because I love the music. This show is a bit different from other musicals in that there is no dialogue, and the entire story is sung, much like an opera. The cast has been working very hard to learn the music, and they are very excited for the show this week.”

The performance will feature 24 high school students and elaborate, colorful sets that were designed by MacIver and Val Oliver.

“We worked with the cast and some parents to get it built,” MacIver said. “We had an incredible crew – one of the parents and his co-workers built pieces at their shop, and then came and put it together on the stage.”

“Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” opens Thursday, March 12th at 6 p.m. in the Mary P. Walker Auditorium at Nantucket High School. Tickets, available at the Nantucket High School office or at the door, are $12 for students and seniors, and $15 for adults. Additional showings are Friday, March 13th, and Saturday, March 14th, at 6 p.m., and Sunday, March 15th, at 2 p.m.
