Greece’s Shipowners Dominant among Billionaires on the Forbes List


ATHENS – Greek business leaders have a strong presence on the World Billionaires list, with the shipping industry overwhelmingly dominating as the main source of wealth. Many of the country’s most powerful economic players come from the shipping industry, while there is no shortage of businessmen from the energy, metals, real estate, and banking sectors.

In the highest position among Greeks is Vicky Safra and her family, who occupy 94th place worldwide. Her fortune is estimated at $27.1 billion, with activities in the banking and financial sector.

Maria Angelicoussi follows in 509th place, with a fortune of $7.5 billion. She continues the dynamic course of the family shipping empire. In 567th place is Vangelis Marinakis and his family, with $7 billion. The family is active in shipping, logistics, and professional soccer.

Other major shipowners also have a significant presence. George Economou is in 806th place with $5.3 billion, while George Prokopiou and his family occupy 908th place at $4.7 billion. In 972nd place is Andreas Martinos and his family with $4.4 billion.

In 1,011th place is Aristotle Mystakidis, with a fortune of $4.2 billion, mainly from mining and metal trading. Spyros Latsis and his family follow in 1,108th place with $3.9 billion, while Panagiotis Tsakos and his family are in 1,189th place with $3.6 billion.

The list continues with Philip Niarchos in 1,504th place with $2.8 billion, Anna Angelicoussi and her family in 1,611th place with $2.6 billion, and Marianna Latsi and her family in 1,755th place with $2.4 billion.

Next are Konstantinos Martinos and his family in 1,913th place with $2 billion, Athanasios Martinos and his family in 1,982nd place with $2.1 billion, while Margarita Latsi-Katsiapi and her family are in 2,386th place with $1.7 billion.

The list also includes Georgios Peristeris in 2,712th place with $1.4 billion, shipowner Ioannis Coustas in 2,858th place with $1.3 billion, as well as Yiannis Alafouzos and his family in 3,185th place with $1.1 billion.

The list of Greek billionaires also includes businessmen such as Evangelos Mytilineos, with a fortune of approximately $1.4 billion in the energy and metals sector, as well as Diamantis Diamantidis and his family, with a fortune of approximately $1.1 billion from shipping. Greek Cypriot businessmen also have a special presence on the list. Stelios Hadjiioannou, founder of the airline easyJet, is in position 2,712 with a fortune of $1.4 billion, while his sister Clelia Hadjiioannou is in position 3,017 with a fortune of $1.2 billion.
