More than $1 million was raised for Greece during a landmark fundraising weekend in Chicago organized by The Hellenic Initiative, culminating in a sold-out concert by Greek superstar Konstantinos Argiros.

The highlight of the weekend took place on March 7 at the United Center, where over 13,000 people attended the concert, making it one of the largest gatherings of the Greek diaspora in support of Greece.
Black-Tie Dinner Honors John P. Calamos
The evening began with a black-tie dinner hosted by THI Vice Chairman John S. Koudounis in honor of renowned investor and philanthropist John P. Calamos Sr..
During the event, Calamos was presented with the THI Lifetime Achievement Award by Koudounis and THI President George P. Stamas in recognition of his contributions to business, philanthropy, and the Greek diaspora.
The dinner brought together prominent members of the Greek-American community, including business leaders, philanthropists, and supporters committed to strengthening Greece’s future.
A Night of Greek Pride
Following the dinner, attendees joined thousands of fans inside the United Center for the sold-out concert by Argiros, with proceeds supporting The Hellenic Initiative’s programs in Greece.
Speaking to the crowd, Koudounis highlighted the strong connection between the diaspora and the homeland.
“I’ve never been more proud to be Greek than I am tonight,” he said. “THI exists to unite Hellenes around the world to invest in Greece’s future, support its people and ensure that the greatest civilization in history has the future it deserves.”
A Weekend Dedicated to Greece
The celebrations began the evening before, when Calamos Investments hosted a reception for sponsors and supporters.
During the event, guests also celebrated Koudounis’ 60th birthday with a surprise video from his family, and Argiros led the crowd in singing “Happy Birthday.”
THI board member Cathy Sakellaris described the atmosphere inside the arena as unforgettable.
“The emotion in the stadium was palpable,” she said. “Seeing thousands of Greeks of every generation sharing the same pride and connection reminded us of the unity we felt during the opening ceremony of the 2004 Athens Olympic Games.”
Supporting Greece’s Future
Funds raised during the Chicago events will support The Hellenic Initiative’s philanthropic and economic development programs in Greece, including initiatives focused on entrepreneurship, job creation, and humanitarian assistance.
Since its founding, THI has invested more than $10.5 million in humanitarian aid and over $13.5 million in economic development programs, helping strengthen communities across Greece and support long-term growth.
The Chicago weekend underscored the global Greek diaspora’s continued commitment to supporting Greece and investing in its future.
