SOUTHPORT, N.C. (WECT) – Four employees from Southport’s Parks & Recreation Department were placed on paid administrative leave on Wednesday, March 11, after financial irregularities were uncovered.
According to a release from the city, the irregularities were found during a forensic accounting investigation. Officials say the matter is now being investigated by the State Bureau of Investigation (SBI).
The city’s Parks & Recreation Before/After-School Program has been suspended indefinitely. Parents and guardians are asked to make alternative childcare arrangements.
All Parks & Recreation facilities and buildings are also closed, and events have been canceled until further notice.
“While this is an active investigation, the City of Southport will not have any additional comment, nor can the city – including elected officials, staff, and/or representatives – discuss personnel matters at this time; however, the city will continue to keep parents and guardians informed regarding the Before/After-School Program,” the City of Southport said in the release.
