MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) – Wednesday night saw an Anishinaabe rock-fusion band take to the stage at the Forest Roberts Theatre in Marquette.
The band held a free performance for NMU students and the community. Attendees had the chance to win door prizes, and purchase merchandise from Wawiyeyaa and Dettloff.
The band is named Waawiyeyaa, meaning ‘the circle’ in the Anishinaabe language. The band shared original music inspired by balance and harmony. Utilizing traditional Anishinaabe instruments with a rock beat and guitar.
Musician, Tyler Dettloff, said a concert like this is the perfect opportunity to expose people to Anishinaabe creators.
“A show like this tonight is a really great opportunity for our community to see some local music from Anishinaabe creators who are tightly knit into our community and have been multigenerational to the creative community here,” Dettloff said.
Dettloff took to the stage and opened for the concert with his daughter. Showing how music carries through generations.
“Me and my uncle first started playing this song way before the band was formed in 2016,” said Wawiyeyaa vocalist Marty Reinhardt. “We have been playing it together since.”
Waawiyeyaa will be performing at various venues this summer. To keep up with where they will be performing click here, for Waawiyeyaa’s website.
