As the name suggests, Reality Bites captures post-college malaise in the mid-90s, via characters in a wardrobe of button-up shirts, fine knits and calf-length skirts. As Lelaina, Winona Ryder drifts through the film in slouchy tailoring and simple dresses, all topped off with a perfectly messy crop. One for the despondent and the well-dressed.
There’s Something About Mary (1998)
In There’s Something About Mary we meet the tragically bereft men that Cameron Diaz’s Mary unwittingly leaves in her wake, still reeling from brief dalliances with her happy-go-lucky attitude and simple yet powerfully effective wardrobe. In her slip dresses, spaghetti straps and colour pop shrunken cardis, she was the ultimate girl next door.
