Postwar film noir guided by actor-director Orson Welles comes to Buzz Classic Movies this week with a Saturday night showing of “The Stranger.”
The 1946 film has earned a 97% “fresh” rating from the critics based on 32 reviews, and an 81% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes’ “Popcornmeter” based on more than 5,000 ratings.
“Immediately following World War II, ex-Nazi Franz Kindler is living under a false identity as a teacher in a small Connecticut town, and has even married the headmaster’s daughter as part of his cover,” says the Rotten Tomatoes summary of the movie. “But when one of Kindler’s old German associates arrives unexpectedly in town, bringing in his wake a sly federal investigator, Kindler resorts to desperate measures to preserve his secret.”
“The sins of World War II reemerge in an idyllic American setting in this diabolically effective noir, buoyed by Orson Welles’ virtuosic direction and performance,” reads the Rotten Tomatoes “Critics’ Consensus.”
“The Stranger” streams at 8 p.m. Saturday on The Signal’s streaming channel, The Buzz, available at buzzscv.com as well as streaming platforms including Roku and Apple TV.
