Saint Patrick’s Day fashion paints the town green Northwestern students share their fashion plans for St. Patty’s Day

With St. Patrick’s Day on the horizon, students are figuring out what to wear for river dyeing, bar crawling and other lucky festivities later this month.

The Daily asked NU students for their advice on outfits that won’t get you pinched and will keep you in style for whatever the day throws at you.

Weinberg first-year Maija Enestvedt said she’s planning to sport a funny t-shirt and jeans. She said she always prefers silly outfits for holidays.

“The point of holidays is to celebrate and have fun and make it not a normal day,” Enestvedt said. “Because of that, I think everyone should just go all out and go crazy. Like, I hope I see people dressed up as leprechauns.”

Enestvedt said she understands that it takes a certain type of person to wear the joke shirt, and that she’s excited to head downtown and see people’s green garbs.

Communication first-year Dashel Grossman may fit the bill as a person who would go all out for the event. Grossman said he wore a leprechaun costume last year because he was performing as a leprechaun in a play.

However, he said that was a lucky occasion.

“I usually would prefer to go with little pops of green rather than a full shouting green right at you type of vibe,” Grossman said. “I think (St. Patrick’s Day) inspires a lot of leprechaun-esque type stuff.”

While Grossman prefers a more curated look, not everyone has the foresight to think ahead about what to wear.

Medill first-year Zoey Sternoff emphasized that choosing an outfit should be more humorous than stylistic.

“There’s lots of times in fashion when you have to dress on theme, where it’s about being cool or looking chic,” Sternoff said. “St. Patrick’s Day is about having the absolute most fun you possibly can.”

Even so, if possible, Sternoff suggests thinking out of the box.

The classic “Kiss Me, I’m Irish” shirt is well known and basic by Sternoff’s standards. While you should wear green to avoid being pinched, resorting to a basic outfit is equally painful.

“You want to show up and show out in a carefree, funny way,” Sternoff said. “Clothing that allows you to take really cute pictures with your friends but also make them laugh.”

Chicago proves one of the best cities to celebrate the holiday in as the city dyes the Chicago River bright green. Hopefully, river attendees will match the green in the water to avoid pinching.

Sternoff has laid out her plans and outfit for her first time celebrating the holiday in Chicago. While she’s not sure it is allowed, she suggests some mischief for the holiday, and needs clothing that will withstand any and all St. Paddy’s activities.

“Run around Chicago and jump in the freaking green river,” Sternoff said. “It might be gross, but I’m not going to wear couture and then get it wet.”
