Carson Montessori Charter School’s 2nd and 3rd grade students recently showcased their curiosity and creativity during the school’s first Science Fair, an event that brought together students, families, and teachers to celebrate hands-on learning and scientific discovery.
In the weeks leading up to the fair, students were given guidelines and deadlines to help them develop thoughtful scientific questions. With support from their families, they tested their ideas, analyzed their data, and prepared presentations explaining their results.
Teachers Haylee Solorio and Heather Thomas led the project and organized the fair, held last night, which highlighted the hard work and dedication of the young scientists.
Projects covered a wide range of topics and demonstrated the students’ ability to explore questions, gather evidence, and communicate their findings.
Families and teachers gathered throughout the evening to view the displays and encourage the students as they shared their work.
The event also featured a scavenger hunt, where students and their siblings searched for clues hidden among the project boards throughout the school.
The fair was evaluated by a panel of local science and education professionals, including hydrologist Jena Huntington of the U.S. Geological Survey; Assistant Research Scientists Chris Dunkerly and Mark Lobsinger of the Desert Research Institute; and retired Carson High School math teacher Susan Drozdoff, who also serves on the school’s governing board.
Winners from the Carson Montessori Science Fair will advance to the SciVenture Science Fair at The Discovery Museum in Reno, where they will have the opportunity to present their projects alongside other young scientists from the region.
Principal Sarah Lobsinger said the evening was a wonderful celebration of curiosity, hard work, and family connection, as students proudly shared the results of weeks of effort with their community. “We are excited and proud to have our students advance to the SciVenture Science Fair and represent Carson Montessori Charter School,” she added.
