Orange Coast College’s Fashion Department and Fashion Club collaborated to bring a thrifting experience to students on campus.
The sale was open on Wednesday and Thursday at The Box to raise money for the students in the Fashion Club and Department.
OCC Art major Lola Knight found “The Vault” convenient and accessible for students to shop.
“It’s incredibly convenient, as I can stop by between classes and look at stuff,” Knight said. “It’s an easy place to stop by and grab stuff.”
Michelle Craner, Assistant Professor, Internship Coordinator, and Advisor to the Fashion Club at OCC, explained that the proceeds mainly go towards students.
“So this event is a fundraiser for the Fashion program,” Craner said. “At the end of the year, we like to celebrate our students and all the proceeds are going back to the students for graduation events. We also have an award ceremony called ‘In Good Company’ awards, where students are recognized for their success.”
Craner also offered insight into the event’s intention.
“This is an event put on by students for students, and everything’s really affordable,” Craner said. “So we’re trying to get it out back into our community.”
The majority of the clothes on sale were donated to the Fashion Department by industry partners or students. The price of the items on sale ranged from $1 to $5.
When asked how much money they would make, Ashley Lien, a student in Fashion A225, estimated they would make $300 per day and that their final earnings would be $600.
Many students who stopped by this event were interested in the variety of items offered at affordable prices.
Jacque McKay, a student in OCC’s Aquaculture Certificate program, was walking by and stopped to browse some swimsuits.
“This (the clothes) is cheaper than what you would find in a thrift store,” McKay said. “It’s nice that all of these bins are $5.”
According to McKay, in addition to the low prices, “The Vault” is located on campus, which provides a nearby shopping outlet for students. The nearest thrift store to OCC is a five-minute drive away. She said having a thrift store within walking distance saves students time.
