Energy Minister Stavros Papastavrou stated that there is US interest in participating in the Greece–Cyprus interconnection project.

“We are in an exploratory phase. The Americans want the data in order to understand what, how, and where. This project has a broader geopolitical dimension,” Papastavrou said, speaking on OPEN on Thursday morning.

Papastavrou added that there is also strong interest in interconnections in the Eastern Mediterranean from Gulf countries and Israel.

“Trade routes are becoming extremely important, such as IMEC, which brings India’s products to Europe, and this is generating broader interest in the Greece–Cyprus interconnection.”

On Wednesday, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides agreed to update the financial and technical parameters of the Great Sea Interconnector, following talks in Athens.
