MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – New Directions of Horry County held its 10th annual Compassion for Fashion event Friday.
The organization hit a goal of raising $150,000 to support the nonprofit’s existing programs and fund a proposed women’s shelter along Mr. Joe White Avenue.
Jeneen Scirocco, owner of All 4 Art, debuted a flapper-inspired, floor-length gown constructed entirely from crocheted black trash bags and spray-painted bottle caps.
Scirocco said the project took approximately one year to complete.
“I found a way to make yarn out of the bags, so I just cut it into a whole bunch of strips and tied it together, so I crocheted the entire dress out of black trash bags,” Scirocco said. “Then, I saved plastic bottle caps throughout the whole year, and I spray-painted them gold and sewed them onto the dress.”
CEO Kathy Jenkins said proceeds from the event also support the nonprofit’s plans for a $7.6 million women’s shelter, which she said would significantly expand capacity.
“We are looking to go from 27 beds to 75 program beds and 22 overnight beds,” Jenkins said.
Jenkins described the mission of the organization as helping people overcome poverty, homelessness, and addiction.
“Every day our staff is working with people in total crisis, helping them put their lives back together so they can walk out of the shelter a new person,” Jenkins said.
While the proposed women’s shelter is still in the works through the city council, Jenkins said the money raised at Compassion for Fashion primarily funds existing programs at the men’s and family shelters.
