NEW YORK – With national pride and the vibrant energy of the younger generation of the Greek diaspora, the official celebrations for Greek Independence Day commenced on March 13 at the Consulate General of Greece in New York.
The event was honored by the presence of Secretary General for Equality and Human Rights Katerina Patsogianni.
The opening of the festivities featured students from the Dimitrios & Georgia Kaloidis Parochial School of Brooklyn, who brought the spirit and heart of Greece to the center of Manhattan. The school’s Senior 2 dance group, composed of students from the 4th, 5th, and 8th grades, presented an outstanding program that blended Greece’s musical heritage with the historical memory of the nation.
Under the direction and artistic guidance of their instructor, Konstantinos Stergioulis, who accompanied the students on guitar, the children performed emblematic works, the ‘Thourios’ by the national revolutionary hero Rigas Feraios and the ‘Tsamikos’ by the legendary composer Manos Hatzidakis.
The program continued with traditional dances from different regions of Greece. With pride and enthusiasm, the students performed the Tsirigotikos, Roumpalia, and Foties Erythraias, bringing to life the rhythm, vitality, and authenticity of Greek folk tradition.
The ceremony concluded in an atmosphere of profound emotion as students and the audience joined their voices to sing the Greek National Anthem, in a moment that powerfully reflected the enduring strength of Greek history, language, and cultural identity within the Greek Diaspora.
The students of the DGK School served as living ambassadors of Greece. Their presence at the Consulate General of Greece in New York was more than symbolic— it was a vivid reminder that the flame of Hellenism remains unquenchable in the heart of New York, bridging our glorious past with the promising future of the Omogenia.
