A new report on Steph Curry and Giannis Antetokounmpo’s relationship signals the Warriors will be make a trade push again this offseason.
The Golden State Warriors are expected to do whatever is possible this summer to assemble a talented roster around Stephen Curry in hopes of making one more strong playoff push with the franchise star. For a while, trade rumors involving Giannis Antetokounmpo have been circulating for the team.
While the Warriors tried and failed at the trade deadline to acquire Antetokounmpo from the Milwaukee Bucks, a new report suggests that the idea of the team landing him in a deal this summer may not be as far-fetched as previously thought.
Speaking on a recent radio hit, NBA insider Marc Spears dropped a telling comment about the links between Curry and Antetokounmpo, and why Golden State making an all-out push for the 2021 Finals MVP might be in the cards.
Warriors Giannis Antetokounmpo Trade Rumors
Antetokounmpo has been linked to several teams should he ask out of Milwaukee, and the Warriors have constantly been mentioned as a potential landing spot for the Greek star. But based on Spears’ latest comments, the idea of him moving to the Bay Area might not be too far-fetched, according to what he heard and saw over the 2026 All-Star weekend.
“Steph knows that they’re gonna try to do everything in their power to get somebody big,” Spears said on the Willard and Dibs radio show. “It’s interesting we’re in [Splash] because I went to Steph Curry’s All-Star party. There was only one non-Warrior that came: Giannis.”
“Giannis came. And I thought that was interesting that Giannis would come because he’s not a guy that shakes hands, kiss babies, like camaraderie, ‘Let’s go to dinner the night before (the All-Star Game),’ and Giannis came to the party, and hung out…That tells me he and Steph have a relationship.”
Spears added that as long as Curry is on the Warriors, they will be a team ‘in the mix’ to land a superstar, whether that be in free agency or through a trade.
Antetokounmpo and Curry links have been going strong since the former threw an alley-oop to the latter in the 2019 All-Star Game, and the two haven’t ruled out the idea of playing with each other at some point in their respective careers.
Again, Golden State reportedly put everything on the table for Antetokounmpo at the deadline, and while a trade didn’t come to fruition, his future with the Bucks is by no means safe or decided for. Spears’ latest comments only stoke the fire about him being interested in teaming with Curry in Golden State, and if Antetokounmpo asks to be moved to the Bay Area this summer, it’s hard to see Milwaukee not granting him that wish.
Warriors LeBron James Free Agency Links
Along with mentioning Antetokounmpo, Spears also discussed the potential of LeBron James going to Golden State as a free agent this summer, as his future with the Los Angeles Lakers looks to be coming to an abrupt end.
There have also been previous links between James and the Warriors in the past, and as he’s set to enter free agency, while the Cleveland Cavaliers remain the favorites to sign the league’s all-time leading scorer, joining Curry and the Northern California team can’t be ruled out.
“I think if LeBron James is a free agent, I don’t see him being in a Lakers uniform,” Spears said. “I would guess that Cleveland is his number one option, and Golden State would likely be right behind. That’s just scuttlebutt from what I hear from people.”
There have also been recent reports that Curry and Draymond Green will recruit James to the Bay Area this summer. Both Green and James have also expressed interest in teaming up in the past.
“Golden State Warriors legends Stephen Curry and Draymond Green will heavily recruit LeBron James this offseason once free agency starts, sources told Lakers Daily,” Ashish Mathur wrote. “James signing with the Warriors can’t be discounted due to his relationship with Curry and Green.”
As Curry will have a major say in what the Warriors do this summer, as well as expecting that the team will at least attempt to land some big names either through a trade or free agency, the idea of Golden State adding Antetokounmpo, James, or even both this offseason can’t be ruled out.
