We already told you no – 2001: A Space Odyssey, Interstellar, and Arrival did not win the Oscar for Best Picture, even though almost everyone agrees they are among the most celebrated films of all time. As with the horror genre, people have spent decades criticizing the fact that science fiction almost never produces Best Picture winners at awards ceremonies like this. In fact, only two science fiction films have ever won the Oscar for Best Picture: The Shape of Water and Everything Everywhere All at Once.
Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape of Water won the Oscar for Best Picture at the 2018 ceremony, while Everything Everywhere All at Once, directed by Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, did the same in 2023. The first is set during the Cold War and follows a cleaning woman at a laboratory who discovers a kind of amphibious man whose origins are classified as top secret.
The second, meanwhile, blends science fiction, comedy, and action in a hilarious story about a Chinese immigrant in the United States who is handed the seemingly simple task of saving the world after an interdimensional rupture.
