Harvey Mason visits MSU College of Music as jazz artist in residence

EAST LANSING, Mich. (WILX) – Michigan State University’s College of Music welcomed jazz musician and drummer Harvey Mason for a week-long residency, during which he mentored students and performed with the MSU Jazz Orchestras.

Mason, a multi-Grammy nominated artist, said continuing to teach jazz is important.

“I believe we shouldn’t lose this,” Mason said. “That’s why schools like this are important because kids actually learn jazz and it keeps tradition going.”

Mason also said the experience is one he plans to repeat.

“They come back to you, tell you that they were at a seminar or something,” Mason said. “So, it’s fun to do it and I said I’ll come back. As many times as they ask me, I’ll come back.”

Mason’s visit was part of MSU Federal Credit Union’s Jazz Artist in Residence program. The series will conclude this year with Anat Cohen, who plays clarinet and saxophone, on April 18.
