Bay Area fans gather to watch 98th Oscars as Academy Awards brings life into Bay Area cinema


TIBURON, Calif. (KGO) — Hollywood’s biggest night breathed life into Bay Area cinema as movie lovers gathered at the Cinelounge in Tiburon.

“I’m smiling ear to ear because it’s such a great moment where people are celebrating film again,” said Christian Meoli, Owner of Cinelouge. “This is a day where Bay Area film can really celebrate.”

Oakland’s very own Ryan Coogler led the charge with Sinners’ 16 nominations, in what’s been a banner year for Bay Area talent.

Jocelyn Kay Levy: “It’s so amazing to see how the movies today and the Bay Area are going to mesh.”

Coogler took home his first Oscar for best screenplay, and the audience erupted for Michael B. Jordan who’s also a first-time Oscar winner, taking home best actor for his role in Sinners.

“Big night for the bay, it’s wonderful to think of all the fine actors that come out of Oakland of this whole area,” said film critic and historian Jan Wahl, who was hosting the evening.

“People appreciate the Oscars because it says this matters, movies can change lives, and it can happen to you, too.
