Greece Launches Platform to Promote Greek Studies Worldwide

The digital platform Faros Global Community, developed by Study in Greece to map Greek studies programmes worldwide, was presented today at the Ministry of Education in Athens.

Education Minister Sophia Zacharaki

The platform aims to provide a detailed overview of universities, educational centres, and organisations promoting Greek language, history, and culture, covering over 500 programmes offered by more than 150 institutions in over 40 countries.

Education Minister Sophia Zacharaki highlighted the role of the Greek language as a bridge connecting Greece with the global academic community, the diaspora, and philhellenes. “Greek can become one of the strongest tools for internationalising higher education. It can attract students, strengthen university collaborations, and open new opportunities for Greece globally,” she said.

The platform forms part of a broader strategy by Study in Greece, Greek public universities, and the national agency for internationalisation, linking Greek institutions with foreign partners to attract students to Greece.

Deputy Foreign Minister Giannis Loverdos emphasised the global significance of Greek language and culture, noting UNESCO’s recognition of 9 February as the World Day of Greek Language. He highlighted a recent cooperation memorandum between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Study in Greece to strengthen international networks and connect Greek communities abroad.

The event featured more than 300 participants both in person and online, with representatives from Greek universities, diaspora organisations, and international institutions. Key speakers included Stella Kokoli, President of the Federation of Greek Teachers in America, and Father Gregory Stamkopoulos, Director of the Education Office of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America.

Faros Global Community allows universities to collaborate internationally through joint programmes, summer schools, and online courses. The platform also integrates the ongoing e-ellinomatheia initiative, enabling learners worldwide to study Greek remotely and prepare for higher education in Greece.

Professor Christos Michalakelis, president of Study in Greece, and SIG Director Theodoros Papaioannou emphasised that the initiative promotes Greece as a study destination, showcasing international programmes and expanding Greek language education globally.
