France Loans Delacroix’s Painting ‘Greece on the Ruins of Missolonghi’ to Greece

ATHENS – The Museum of Fine Arts of Bordeaux has loaned Eugène Delacroix’s painting “Greece on the Ruins of Missolonghi” to Greece, to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Exodus of Missolonghi.

The painting, which captures the tragedy and heroism of one of the defining moments of modern Greek history, will be hosted at the Xenokrateion Archaeological Museum until November 2026.

“This work does not only narrate events, but captures and highlights the deeper spiritual essence and cultural background of the struggle, creating an image that is now considered timeless and timely. The painting is widely considered one of the most recognizable symbols of the struggle for freedom,” Greek Culture Minister Lina Mendoni stated.

“The 200-year anniversary of the Exodus enhances the historical and emotional significance of the painting, turning it into an act of historical remembrance and collective reflection at a particularly difficult geopolitical juncture amid critical challenges over freedom, humanitarian ideals and the cultural values of European peoples. Nowadays, Europe may be at one of the most critical moments of defending its own humanitarian ideals,” the culture minister noted.
